Finished the “Brown Rice” transcriptions (Chenrezig and Degi-Degi), didn’t realize just how thoroughly the music was based on mantras, vocal frameworks, that the playing by Don Cherry and Frank Lowe is
primarily improvised over the fundamental vamps; very open music.
Now to integrate these pieces with the materi…al he composed in the 1960’s, very different music but equally as open. And remembering how much Thelonious Monk was in Cherry’s playing, seeing him in a duo with Ed Blackwell in 1986 confirmed this.
