Sunday I head to Milwaukee with Terrie Hessels, Bruno Johnson, and Adrienne Pierluissi to play a duo gig with Terrie at the Sugar Maple. Terrie and I play 2 sets to a small but very appreciative audience- each piece almost like a microcosm of possible choices to work on in the future; we both wish that the show had been recorded, no such luck. After the concert we drove back to Chicago with Bruno so we could start recording the 2nd half of the soundtrack project with Steve Albini and Nate Wooley Monday morning at Strob. Though I was quite exhausted, Monday proved to be an extraordinary day- it was Steve’s 1st session as a “side man” and he had never played “on the spot” before. Having Terrie in the studio to play as well seemed to inspire the circumstances, both guitarists recorded some incredible tracks- solos and rhythm parts- a highlight was hearing the two of them solo together over rhythmic material recorded last week by Jason Adasiewicz, John Herndon, and Wayne Montana. Nate worked on parts Monday, and improvised beautifully on Tuesday- duos with Terrie and a blistering solo over an apocalyptic groove set up by Albini, Herndon, and Montana. After 11 hours in the studio all parts were recored; the evening finished with a reed quartet arrangement of the final 3 themes for the 2nd half of Parallax Sounds… Now just have to mix the whole thing with Bob Weston by Thursday night!
