Next week the Option series at ESS in Chicago (Monday, May 29, 7:30pm) and the Option Milwaukee series at the Sugar Maple (Tuesday, May 30, 8pm) will present Joe McPhee’s ensemble, Survival Unit III, with Fred Lonberg-Holm (cello/electronics) and Michael Zerang (drums). These performances promise to be important and powerful. Joe has described the concerts as a “re-imagining of their recording ‘Barrow Street Blues (Live): Remembering Ornette Coleman’ in the time of Trump.” Much appreciation goes to Keith and Mary Berg for their economic assistance with bringing Joe to the Midwest for these shows. In anticipation of these events, Robert Szocik interviewed Joe and I for his radio show on WMSE, my thanks to them for letting me be a part of the conversation.
