A great afternoon spent with the painter Richard Hull, walking through the Art Institue of Chicago and having him discuss painting with me; fascinating the parallels between the vocabulary used to talk
about the visual and aural arts. Most of the work we looked at was either mid 1600’s or early 20th century and representational, but we ended up in front of De Kooning’s generic keflex 750mg “Excavation.” And so many of the
issues regarding tension and form from the earlier paintings were still there. We accidentally bumped into Jim Nutt while in front of “A Sunday on La Grand Jatt;” fascinating to listen to both painters
discuss this work, and trying to draw.
