The Atomic/Vandermark 5 tour ends in
Birmingham, England; and is one of the best concerts of the tour,
rivaling the show in London (the UK has been inspiring for both bands it
seems…). Atomic opens on this evening and keeps their standard as
high as ever; Magnus Broo, Ingebrigt Haker-Flaten, Fredrik Ljungkvist,…
Paal Nilssen-Love, and Havard Wiik are 5 of the best musicians on the
planet. I decide to focus on presenting only new material for the first
time on the tour and the band plays “Fables of Facts,” “Location,”
“Whether,” and “Leap Revisited,” so well we get one of the few encores
of the tour, and play “Second Phase;” the complete new book in one
performance. I hope to record the music with the quintet early next
year, but scheduling is already proving difficult. Now a week in London
for an actual vacation before two shows with Full Blast at the end of
the month. I’m going to need to find a way to keep my chops up while
enjoying the city and the museums, otherwise Brotzmann, Pliakis, and
Wertmuller are going to level me on the 29th and 30th…
