Band Biography
THE MARGOTS
The Margots are a new ensemble organized to develop and record the songs of Adrienne Pierluissi, a contemporary painter living in Milwaukee. In addition to Ms. Pierluissi, the band includes a set of musicians who represent a wide range of critically acclaimed bands from Chicago and Milwaukee. All are long-standing members of these cities’ creative music scenes (Tim Daisy [drums], John Dereszynski [guitar], Nick Macri [electric bass], Rick Reger [keyboards], Ken Vandermark [reeds]), and perform in groups as varied as Made To Break, the Resonance Ensemble, Stirrup, Vox Arcana, and Wereworm.
The Margots first album, released by Okka Disk in May of 2013 and called “Pescado,” was developed through a process of collaboration between Adrienne Pierluissi and Ken Vandermark, who called upon his years of experience working with the Dutch group, The Ex, to create his first arrangements for a vocalist. John Dereszynski provided the harmonic foundation for the pieces, and the Margots explored these elements as a group to make them their own. The music was recorded and mixed by Bob Weston in Chicago during August of 2012 and January of 2013. Joe McPhee [recitation], Jen Paulson [viola], and Tomeka Reid [cello] were added to the second set of recordings, expanding the scope of the project. The material, which can be considered a song cycle, was inspired in part by Robert Wyatt’s, “Comicopera,” and the revolutionary Tropicalia music from Brazil.
Currently, the Margots have concerts scheduled in Milwaukee and Chicago, and are engaged in the preliminary work on new material for their next studio project, which is scheduled to begin in autumn of 2013.
