Visit 2 art exhibits in Chicago with my folks- “Alexander Calder and
Contemporary Art: Form, Balance, Joy,” at the MCA; and “The Jazz Loft
Project: W. Eugene Smith in NYC, 1957-1965,” at the Chicago Cultural
Center. Both had incredible work. I wish that there had been more space
allotted to Calder’s art at the MCA,
the pieces were too often crowding each other. The Jazz Loft exhibition
was exhilerating, both for the photographs of the musicians (everyone
from Thelonious Monk to Bill Evans, from Jimmy Raney to Jim Hall) and
of the street scenes outside Smith’s windows; as well as all the
archive materials- getting to listen to Monk and Hall Overton rehearse
with the big band before the Town Hall gigs was mind blowing! Here’s a
